Surprise ...

The COST Of A World's Best B&B
Is Usually Far Less Than A Hotel

The extra costs in a hotel for breakfast, using the Mini-Bar, video hire, parking and extra for a "room with a view" are usually FREE in a World's Best B&B.

The Room Rate or fee for a World's Best B&B is the one that is quoted. In my experience the fee quoted has included the whole stay, ie it is all-inclusive, and it has still been a lower rate than other types of accommodation in the area.

Compared to other accommodation, a World's Best B&B is the best value.

It is unlikely there are any other charges for your stay.

The extra costs in a hotel for breakfast, using the Mini-Bar, video hire, parking and extra for a "room with a view" are usually FREE in a World's Best B&B. Not only this, but our experience has been to stay with Owners who are travellers themselves, or Bonsai experts or wine growers. Our Hosts have been experts at something that has helped our travels.

In addition, tipping is not expected at a World's Best B&B.

It's worth comparing the difference between hotels and World's Best B&Bs in what's typically included in the cost of an overnight stay. Although every World's Best B&B is different, most of the extra charges you'd encounter at a hotel are free at a bed and breakfast inn.

B&Bs offer a far better value than a hotel with the same room rate. If you place a value on all the "free" benefits included in the cost of your stay at a bed & breakfast inn, you'll be delighted how much you're really getting at a no extra cost to you.

Breakfast

Breakfasts will vary depending on the local, in season foods

A B&B breakfast is an important part of your stay. This is where you can meet fellow (international) travellers if you choose or have a private breakfast.
Most B&Bs provide a free full breakfast, usually including fresh fruit and juice, a main cooked breakfast with eggs, meats, tomato and possibly home-baked muffins, often served on elegant china and silver.

Breakfast in a luxury hotel can cost from $7 to $30 per person. Moderately priced motels can often offer a free self-serve breakfast, often called a "continental breakfast".

Mini-Bar

Many B&Bs provide some refreshments FREE.  These can include soft drinks, coffee and tea makings, wine and beer, biscuits and snacks, fresh fruit, cookies, candies, evening desserts, and sherry in a dining room, and occasionally right in guest suites. These treats are usually free, but occasionally guests are asked (on an honor system) to contribute a small amount (50 cents - $1) per item to cover costs.

Mini-bars are stocked with tempting treats, from candies and lolllies to potato chips and soda to little packets of aspirin. While convenient, the prices are usually double or triple the costs in a nearby convenience store.

Movies and Faxes

Many World’s Best B&Bs have small video and DVD or book libraries that you are welcome to use for free. Hosts will typically send or receive a two- to three-page fax for you for free, or at a modest cost.

Extras like movies and faxes can quickly add $10 to $20 to your bill.

Parking

Parking is free at World’s Best B&Bs, although the number of spaces may be limited in some areas.

Many hotels charge $15 to $20 (or more) a day for valet parking; the free or reduced rate parking may be a good walk from the lobby.

The View

At a World’s Best B&B you will find good and magnificent views from all of the guestrooms. Your windows may overlook manicured gardens, mist covered mountains, your own personal patio or even a Bonsai garden.

For a room with a view, whether it’s a city panorama or one of the ocean, guests typically pay a premium; standard rooms may overlook the parking lot, a roof or even the Hotel next door.

Bellman or
Porter

The "Bellman" or "Porter" at most World’s Best B&Bs is likely to be the Host, so no tipping is required. Most Hosts are happy to assist you with luggage, but typically expect guests to lend a hand with the bags. If you can't carry heavy things, don't be shy about asking for help -- but remember to pack light, as well. Once you arrive at a Hotel, the Bellman or Porter will be constantly available to move your bags around.
While the assistance may be welcome, the constant tipping can be onerous.
Tipping Tips are unnecessary and would not usually be accepted. Tips are appropriate and encouraged.

Concierge type assistance

This is a B&B specialty. Hosts are generally willing and able to provide concierge type services, eg providing advice on the best locations for shopping, antiquing, hiking, and so on, plus assistance in renting bicycles, canoes, kayaks, etc. Tips are unnecessary and would not usually be accepted.

Concierge services are usually available only at luxury hotels; tips are appropriate and encouraged

Room Service

Although B&Bs don't offer room service, some will serve breakfast in your room, usually included in the room rate, or for a small extra charge. A few will serve a special-occasion dinner in your suite. Some will allow you (upon request) to have a meal delivered, to be enjoyed in the inn's common area, or in your room, if an appropriate dining area is available; this service is normally free.

Room service meals (with added service and delivery charges) are usually double or triple the cost of eating in a local coffee shop or restaurant.

Telephone Charges

Local and toll-free calls are free at almost every B&B; guests are usually asked to use a calling card for long-distance calls, and some Hosts will even sell you a calling card at cost. Many B&Bs do not have in-room telephones. Although most travellers prefer to use their cell phones or mobiles, be sure to check with the Host if you’re going to a rural area, where cell-phone service may be unreliable.

Many hotels charge twice thenormal rate for local and toll-free calls; long-distance rates can be extremely high.

Access to the Internet

B&Bs can offer free WiFi if they are located in an area where high-speed Internet access via cable or DSL is available.
If required, check with the Host when you are making the Booking.

Luxury hotels typically charge around $20 daily for Internet access. Budget-oriented motel chains can offer free access in their guest rooms and common areas.

SUMMARY

In general our experience with World’s Best B&Bs is that there are no extra fees.  What you are quoted for the night, or per night is the full cost.  World’s Best B&Bs offer excellent services and facilities with the Owners (your Hosts) meeting and greeting and looking after you during your stay.
Your Hosts can provide comprehensive local knowledge.

Extra services over and above the rent of the room are generally extra costs.
You will most likely never meet the Owner, and to enjoy your stay, will be reliant on the training the staff have received.
