I used to be so inundated with work, that I could not even think about a holiday coming up nor create a travel checklist. Sure we'd get the tickets, and look into travel insurance and such things, but we often paid a premium because we'd do it late. Booking too late, or simply not being as prepared as we should.

A travel checklist helps to reduce the problems that come from such late efforts, and help to put more money back into your pocket for that great time away.

This Two-Year Checklist is about Research and Organisation

List your needs from your previous travel ...

For example: you may recall you need to carry a water-bottle for when you have those "waiting moments" - airports, taxis, buses, even waiting to pick up a hire car.

What do I Research for my trip?

Two years equals a bit over a million minutes ! Imagine, only a million minutes. Best get a move on then ...

Two years away from leaving, there is much to do:
. Identifying how much time you can have to travel
. Possible destinations
. How you will travel to your destination(s) - getting there and getting home
. How you will move around when you get there
. Your accommodation whilst you are away
. What to see and do whilst away
. Massaging your travel plans to fit within your budget

This time is about gathering information, organising it, and evaluating options.

This time is also very exciting, as you prepare for your travels. I personally find
The preparation, the planning and the decision making second only in great fun, to the trip itself.

So I attack it with gusto and energy, and ENJOY every minute of it.

Identify a place where you can store ideas for planning your trip ...

1. Setup a special folder on your computer to file relevant materials.
Name and record TODAY's date in a meaningful way, for example
Name could be SpainMadrid
Date as a reverse date,eg 20080919. This means 19 September 2008.
The filename will then become:
SpainMadrid20080919.doc

Why do this?

The name is very meaningful, easily identified with the capitals, and very important, will present no problems to backup as there are no spaces in the name.
Another huge advantage is that if you have several similar articles, they will neatly order themselves and are easily found, eg
SpainMadrid20080919.doc
SpainMadrid20080920.doc
SpainMadrid20081011.doc

You always know that the latest date is at the bottom.

2. Paper and brochures: Drop them into one place. An empty drawer or a suitcase are ideal. Such a place means they are easily found when required and removes clutter.
