From the busy metropolis of Firenze (or Florence) we wended our car through the busy streets, reading maps and vowing to have a GPS next time. We were on our way to Tuscany and our excitement was mounting.

For Australians familiar with driving on the left hand side, driving out of an Italian city was going to be a feat. BUT it was easier than we thought.

Harder was navigating around eastern Tuscany where there are no road signs and the grasses on the road side can grow tall. But we never got lost !!

I must say there is no better place in the world where I wouldlike to “get lost” than in Tuscany !!

“Now you will experience the real Tuscany and the real Italy”, said Guido when we were navigating to Simone’s and Guido’s Worlds Best B&B near Cortona and Arezzo. “We use landmarks”, he added. Landmarks in deed, a sunflower paddock here, cut hay there, a shrine on the corner. What a delightful adventure so far away from the “normal” of life in Sydney Australia.

THAT IS WHY we were in Tuscany. Our amazing adventure.

Apart from the story, this was apt preparation for this most exquisite place. Rolling hills, grasses, sunflowers bending to the sun, ochres and browns, greens in the fields and the blues of the vast skies, and everywhere that Tuscan light.

We awoke to that light in Cortona, and looked through it from the rooftop at San Gimignano, we drove through it in vineyards of the Chianti hills above Sienna, we walked in it in the fields of Creti.

Here in Tuscany, we immersed ourselves in the sights, smells and sounds of Tuscany. In the wines, food, and the animated conversations of the Tuscans around us.
