The Waitomo Cave Adventure
That Will Have You
Spellbound

Spellbound is the real Waitomo cave adventure where you can

Get Away From The Crowds And
Experience Magnificent Countyside?
Be Stilled By Nature's Magnificent Creations.

If that sounds good then have a look at this.

When we visited the Waitomo cave area of New Zealand, a highlight of our Stay was Libby and Peter’s magnificent Spellbound Caves adventure.

This is a MUST INCLUDE on any visit to the area, as Sir David Attenborough did when he filmed the Life in the Undergrowth series for the BBC in the Spellbound caves.

The Spellbound trip is an adventure led by Peter who has great passion and interest in all things concerning caves and the geology. Being an Earth Scientist I suppose this is only natural.

He has built the access to these caves which not only allowed us to see their magnificence, but also ensured they were looked after through the paths and rails in and out.

Peter coined the now common term “Black Water” rafting as a result of inventing the original blackwater adventures in the area. So Peter is very used to doing different things, and Spellbound is certainly very different.

We were literally spellbound by our entire adventure, from the journey in and the magnificent glow worms in the two caves we visited. Here is a photo gallery of what you will see.

On this tour we scaled mountains in a 4-wheel drive and viewed giant gorges and grassy green rolling hills with the ever present sheep and dairy cow. A light mist freshened our faces when we walked around to take in the view. Just getting there should not be missed even though it took no more than 30 minutes.

I was even amazed by Peter’s inventive Gate Closers – make sure you check these out.

Two adventures awaited us: one a dry safari into a magnificent glow worm den to whet our appetites and find out about the life these little critters live, and the second into a wet adventure (although you don’t get wet) as you venture deep into a cave on a raft to the Glow worm City (as I have named it). You’ll be delighted when you arrive to watch the glow worms shine even brighter when ‘asked’ by Peter.

The two tours were separated by a “tea break” in a delightful shack and the feeding of a hungry eel. Have you ever fed an eel before by hand? Now that was something different.

Spellbound – definitely not to be missed.

Just across the road from Spellbounds Office is outstanding, affordable accommodation. One of the world's best B&Bs.
